Blackout mode is Call of Duty’s take on the battle royale genre. It takes place on a single huge map that mashes together a bunch of classic Call of Duty locations and ideas, ranging from the series’ early tight urban corridors to zones where you’ll encounter zombies. The launch version, so far, feels a bit smoother than the beta, although the progression system is somewhat limited. Points are earned by killing other players or making it into the round’s top 15 spots. It appears that the only big unlockables at launch are character models.
Compared to the complex building skills you need to succeed in Fortnite, Blackout is a more straightforward experience. And it already feels better and more stable than PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds did in its early months.
